Avoid Annoying Hair Clogs in Your Shower Drain
When you have a big family, your shower gets put to extra work. More showers also mean that more hair, dirt, and grime that can build up in your shower drain, blocking the necessary flow of water and causing slow, or no, draining. You don’t have to wait until there is a clog to clear it out when instead you can prevent drain clogs before they happen.
Adding an extra layer of defense in your shower or bath will immediately pay off. Installing a drain cover is about as easy as it can get. Place the drain cover over the drain. The drain cover can block hair and other large debris from getting down into the drains, and there are drain covers appropriate for any drain in your home, not just the shower.
You can also act as a defender in stopping clogs from affecting your drains. Keep an eye out for loose hairs and debris while you are taking a shower. Hairs on the walls or the sides of the tub can be wiped away and moved further from the drain, so you can throw them away after bathing.
Before even stepping into the shower, you can make a difference. By brushing your hair first, you will remove loose or unattached hairs from your head so they will not fall to the shower floor.
Running the water for a little bit longer can help flush away smaller blockages in your drains. Men’s facial hair, although small, can have the same effect as longer hairs, and running the tap for an extra minute can pull the hair all the way through the pipe, and not just sitting around toward the front.
If you do happen to run into a clogged drain, there are a few methods you can do yourself to try and clear them. Without any tools besides a pair of gloves, you can attempt to reach in and pull out shallower clogs on your own. Deeper clogs can be grabbed with a wire hanger by shaping a small hook on one end and trying to “fish” out the clog.
